4 Key Camping Items Besides Your Tent

The simplicity of a camping holiday is partly what makes it such an enjoyable and satisfying experience. It allows us to truly appreciate the natural environment – all its wonderful sights, sounds and smells.

But even though camping is quite straightforward for the most part – at least once the tent’s up –there are a few items we should always make sure we have. As the age-old expression goes – it’s better to have something and not need it than need it and not have it.

With that in mind, here are some key items we recommend taking on any camping trip, anywhere:

1. At least one first aid kit

It’s always handy to have plasters, bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers and all those other first aid items to hand. You never know when you might need them. And it’s not like a first aid kit takes up a lot of space.

If there are more than four of you, we’d strongly advise taking a spare.

2. A tent repair kit (or at least some duct tape)

A little rip or cut can have a large impact on our enjoyment and our level of comfort. It can let the elements in, and it can also let valuable heat escape. Investment in a tent repair kit is wise – it will allow you to quickly deal with a cut, and it will put your mind at ease.

They’re widely available for between £5 and £10.

3. A torch – preferably one for each person

Pitch blackness is great when you’re nice and settled in your sleeping bag, waiting to nod off – but if you’re up and about it’s always good to see where you’re going, making a torch one of the key camping items.

So let there be light – take some torches.

4. Warm jumpers and waterproof jackets

If you’re camping anywhere in the UK, it could easily get nippy at night-time – even in the middle of summer. And of course, as British campers, we should always be ready for the rain. But if we’re prepared, this isn’t a problem.

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.”

We’ve all heard that one before – and it’s true. Many famous people have said it – Billy Connolly perhaps being the most famous, but legendary British fellwalker Alfred Wainwright said it first. And he should know.
