Birkrigg Stone Circle
Birkrigg Stone Circle
Also known as Sunbrick or Birkrigg Common, is a Bronze Age monument set on a gently sloping hillside with views over the village of Bardsea, Ulverston Sands, and out towards Morecambe Bay. The site originally featured two concentric rings of stones, possibly separated by a ditch.
The outer circle measures about 26 metres in diameter and once had fifteen stones, though these are now fallen and scattered. The inner ring, around 9 metres across, still has ten upright stones, though none stand taller than a metre.
Excavations in the centre revealed the remains of five cremations, including one in a collared urn now displayed at Carlisle Museum. The circle has been damaged and rebuilt several times over the years, making it difficult to confirm any specific solar or lunar alignments.
