The Nature Reserve: A Hidden Gem at Fell End and Hall More

Fell End Nature Reserve (FENR) was established in 2016/17 when the owner of Pure Leisure transformed 90 acres of underutilized farmland and woodland into a thriving natural sanctuary.

Nearly a decade later, the reserve has flourished into a diverse ecosystem, featuring lakes nestled within wet and dry meadows, along with woodlands and scrub areas. These habitats support an incredible variety of flora and fauna, from dragonflies to deer and everything in between.

We’ve named it the “Quiet Reserve”, a peaceful haven where visitors can walk, sit, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature. Whether you’re seeking rest, reflection, or gentle exercise, the sights and sounds of the wildlife will surround you.

As you explore the easy-access paths, suitable for all ages and abilities, you’ll discover three wildlife hides. These shelters offer a chance to observe nature up close, even in less favorable weather, without disturbing the creatures around you. A quote on the side of the “John Wilson” hide sums it up perfectly:

“Please make time in your busy lives to look at wildlife. In my experience, you will find it enthralling, inspiring, and breathtakingly beautiful.”

The reserve is also closely tied to the surrounding farmland. Each autumn and winter, Highland cattle graze the dry meadow, breaking up the ground and naturally enriching the soil. This helps us restore the meadow to its former glory as a traditional hay meadow, bursting with a unique array of flowers and grasses native to this part of the country.

Fell End Nature Reserve is lovingly managed by Roger and Carol, with the dedicated support of Pure Leisure staff—particularly Cameron, whose skills with a chainsaw and excavator are invaluable in maintaining and expanding the natural habitats.

At Hide 1 or the Fell End reception, you can pick up a map of the reserve and a special leaflet titled “A Young Naturalist Challenge.” This fun activity is designed for families and encourages children to sharpen their observational and thinking skills, earning points toward a gold star. It’s a core part of our mission to engage younger generations in the conservation and appreciation of the natural world.

We believe educating and inspiring young minds is crucial for the future of our environment. So, join in with your children and see if you too can earn a gold star!

Fell End Nature Reserve is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, offering a serene retreat to unwind and connect with nature. We invite you to visit, enjoy, and come back again and again.

Please note that dogs are not allowed in the nature reserve.
