Summer Events to Look Forward to in the Lake District
1 June 2018
We all look forward to the summertime for the warmer weather and the longer evenings, but with that comes a whole host of fun and exciting events to look forward to throughout the Lake District.
Whatever your interests are, there is bound to be an event for you, with everything from music and beer festivals, to agricultural shows and sporting events being laid on throughout the warmer months.
To help you decide what to put in your diary for the summer, we’ve put together this handy guide to events that are on over the next few months in the Lake District.
6th June – 16th June
2018 marks the 15th year of the Ulverston International Music Festival and the programme is packed with an all-star selection of wonderful musicians. The varied programme includes the English Touring Opera performing Mozart’s classic comedy The Marriage of Figaro, a screening of Brassed Off, and a chance to hear Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the band that inspired it.
A fun day out for all the family, the Ullswater Country Fair features dog shows, Westmorland Wrestling, fell races, terrier racing and much more. There are children’s sports, trade stands, vintage tractors, and enough to keep the whole family entertained.
The live music concerts are always a hugely popular element of the Cartmel Races. Previous years have featured Tom Jones, Simply Red and Jools Holland. This year will see Boyzone playing as part of their 2018 farewell tour, which is also a celebration of their 25th anniversary. With 21 singles in the UK top 40 charts, including six No. 1’s, Boyzone are one of the UK and Ireland’s most successful bands.
7th July – 8th July
The Derwent Water Regatta is ‘Cumbria’s quirkiest regatta’, and is the perfect opportunity to just turn up and have fun trying your hand at something you may not have tried before. Local outdoor providers will run sessions for canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, sailing catamarans and Viking longboats.
Northern Craft Beer Festival
19th July – 21st July
If you’re a lover of beer and ale, you should definitely pop to the Hawkshead Brewery Summer Beer Festival, which is held at their beer hall in July. Sample 80+ cask and keg beers from modern craft breweries and enjoy live music and street food. Entry is free!
For keen walkers, being able to navigate with a map and compass is an invaluable skill to learn. Head out and learn basic navigation skills in small, friendly groups at this event which costs just £15 for adults, and £6 for children.
This traditional Lakeland Show offers visitors an insight into traditional Cumbrian life and attracts thousands of visitors each year. There are shows for Fell Foxhounds, Terriers, Beagles and Lurchers, Herdwick sheep and sheepdogs, as well as traditional Cumbrian sports including Westmorland Wrestling and a fell race up to the top of Coniston Old Man and back.
Broughton in Furness
This is an agricultural show with a long and rich history. It’s a highlight of the seasonal calendar in the local area. It’s a fun day out for families from near and far, shining a light on the local community. With vintage machinery, livestock, crafts, entertainment for children, and Westmorland Wrestling amongst so much more.
